Photo Fishing Competition — September 6
The Greater Los Angeles Council of Divers (GLACD) will hold their 3rd annual Photo Fishing Competition on Saturday, September 6 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Malaga Cove, Redondo Beach.

Photos must be obtained by free diving. Each participant provides their own camera and film. Two categories will be considered, Nikonos or housed cameras and disposable cameras. Film must be color negative and 1-hour film processing compatible. Entry fee is $15, which includes film processing. Presentation of awards will be at the Redondo Beach Brewing Company on Sunday at 4 pm.

3Rs Beach Diving Workshops - Sept. 13, Oct. 11
Rocks, Reefs and Rips program (3Rs) is a mini-course designed to familiarize divers with popular beach dive sites and improve their beach diving skills. Los Angeles and Orange county sessions will take place: September 13 at Reef Point (Orange County) and October 11 at Broad Beach (Los Angeles County).

In addition a 3Rs course will be staged in San Diego County, September 13 at Hospital Point. Visit www.groups.yahoo.com/group/rocks-rips-reefs on the web for further details for the San Diego 3Rs.

Instructors will demonstrate and supervise proper surf entry and exit procedures, explain unique aspects of the dive site, and discuss dive condition assessment techniques. Participants are then led on a snorkeling tour of the dive site. (Participants are to wear full wetsuit, mask, fins, snorkel, and a weight belt with half of the normal weight they use for diving. Tanks and regulators are not allowed.)

The courses are staged in the morning beginning at 8 a.m. A donation is suggested. The San Diego 3Rs is staged by the San Diego Council of Divers, San Diego Lifeguards, and an area dive club. Under the Waves for Kids—September 18 and 20
Each month California Dive Center presents the latest episode of “Under the Waves” just for kids age 3-11. In these special programs, kids can learn more about scuba diving and the oceans. This video presentation series is shown on the 3rd Thursday and Saturday of every month. Thursday at 6 p.m., Saturday at 3 p.m. This event is free and refreshments are served. Chocolate Lobster Dive — September 20
Both certified scuba and skin divers are invited to participate in the Sixth Annual Cabrillo Chocolate Lobster Dive taking place on Saturday, September 20, 2003. Contestants in this unusual event will dive off the waters of Cabrillo Beach in search of hundreds of milk chocolate lobsters.

The event is limited to 500 participants who will be eligible to win over $35,000 in prizes provided by dive equipment manufacturers and other sponsors. The grand prizes include a Cobra Kayak, and a trip on a Royal Caribbean Cruises. Proceeds from the event benefit Cabrillo Marine Aquarium’s Aquatic Nursery Program, a place where Cabrillo Marine Aquarium (CMA) grows young sea animals and young scientists.

Monterey Clean Up Dive — September 20
The next Monterey Clean Up Dive will be on Saturday, September 20. Participation is free and you do not have to preregister, but it is helpful for us to know how many are coming so organizers can order enough food for the BBQ. California Coastal Cleanup Day — September 20
Coastal Cleanup Day takes place every year on the third Saturday of September, from 9 a.m. to Noon. This year, that day falls on September 20. Coastal Cleanup Day is a great way for families, students, service groups, and neighbors to join together, take care of our fragile marine environment, show community support for our shared natural resources, learn about the impacts of marine debris and how we can prevent them, and to have fun. There will be both surface and underwater cleanups.

San Diego Underwater Film Festival — Sept. 21 and 22
September 21 and 22, at 7 p.m. the San Diego Underwater Film Festival will be held at the Town and Country Convention Center. This image expose is a delightful mix of film and digital slide shows.
