Kids Learn &Appreciate by Getting Wet

It's October and the kids are safely nestled in their classrooms, with essays of summer vacations a thing of the past. When I think back over the years of all the essays written by our three boys, it is amazing how much they have written of water-filled days, all at some beach or island somewhere out there. Their fond memories of snorkeling and free-diving with the garibaldi makes me smile.

It can be a great responsibility and a great joy to introduce the ocean to the next generation. When we talk about making sure that the ocean is intact and will be clean and enjoyable, it's got to be more than what we might or might not do. It must be proper education for our young ones. More importantly, I think if we personally involve the children in the enjoyment, the care will naturally follow.

Our two younger boys starting snorkeling at age three, and continue to do so. In July we spent time on the North Coast freediving, with the boys sharing in bringing the abalone dinners. They know the wonders and awe of the ocean. They also appreciate the conservation of our resources.

Summer may be over, but education and enjoyment can continue throughout the year. Nothing is more rewarding than to see that "what I did last summer essay" filled with dive trips and garibaldis, rather than Nintendo® and Pokéman®.
