Long Point Development Plans Approved
The City of Rancho Palos Verdes has approved the development plans for Long Point, a popular shore dive location often referred to as “Old Marineland.” The plans call for the construction of a 400-room resort hotel with bungalows, casitas and villas units along with a golf facility. Of key interest to divers is the promised public access to the shoreline which includes 50 free parking spaces located adjacent to a gently sloping paved path to the water’s edge.

Divers currently have access to the site during daylight hours. The nearby land is often used as a movie set. It is not known the exact date when construction will begin.

Big Squid in Isthmus Cove, Catalina
Following up on a story we reported in the September issue about big squid appearing at Huntington Beach, there are now reports that the big squid showed up three nights in a row in late August at Isthmus Cove on Catalina Island. It is speculated that these unusual sightings are attributed to this year’s mild warm water El Niño effect.

Monterey Harbor Dive Cleans Up
The recent Monterey Harbor Clean Up dive netted a total of 5,680 pounds of trash. Some of the more interesting finds: one wheel barrow, one household toilet, one marine toilet, one fish trap, one six pack of beer, one tombstone dated 1981. Congratulations to all! Fish & Game Nab Boat Captains
Recently 13 party boat captains were busted on a variety of Fish and Game violations. Included were one count of felony conspiracy to violate Fish and Game laws and numerous misdemeanor infractions that include using illegal hooks, exceeding catch limits and keeping prohibited species. The sting operation involved nine counties—from Mendocino to Orange—on a host of additional allegations that involve wounding pelicans and seals, fudging records to avoid catch limits and catching fish out of season. Apparently captains were encouraging customers to break the rules.
