Vessel Collides with Dive Charter Boat Vision
The dive charter boat Vision out of Santa Barbara was damaged recently when another vessel, 80 feet in length, collided with the Vision while it was anchored at San Miguel Island. Divers were preparing for a night dive in the foggy twilight when the other vessel appeared out of the gloom, steaming at an estimated 16 knots. The vessel was able to turn at the last minute averting a more serious collision. While the damage to the Vision was substantial, repairs are underway and the Vision will be able to finish out the fall diving season.
Scientists Perform Detailed Study of Monterey Bay
In one of the most ambitious ocean experiments ever conducted, scientists from 14 institutions, coordinated by James Bellingham, director of engineering at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute in Moss Landing, spent the month of August trying to understand complex waters of Monterey Bay. Just about everything that can be measured in a body of seawater was measured by an armada of diving robots, deep-sea gliders, research ships and aircraft. The central goal is to understand the dynamics of the summer upwelling, the seasonal movement of cold, nutrient-rich deep water vital to the well-being of shorebirds and marine mammals.
Swell Sharks in Monterey
Monterey divers have reported an unusually large number of swell sharks during late summer and early fall. Swell sharks are always found in Monterey waters, but are not normally seen in any great numbers.
