Abalone Worm Evicted
As abalone was taking a downhill slide in the late 20th century by withering foot syndrome and overfishing, it was hit by a non-native worm that bores into its shell stunting growth. The sabellid worm was introduced from south Africa through abalone farms. And it was feared the abalone had been dealt another severe blow to its already severe downhill battle.
An extensive eradication effort was mounted. Since 1997, no worms have been detected in the natural environment and officials have declared the worm officially evicted.
El Niño Is Back, But Its Weak
Tell-tale signs of a newborn El Niño have appeared in parts of Peru, Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands, forecasters with the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said. Government forecasters said it will likely be less devastating than the 1998 one which triggered droughts and flooding around the world. NOAA said there may be fewer Atlantic hurricanes and a milder summer rainy season in the U.S. Southwest. The Pacific Northwest could see less snow this winter, while Gulf Coast states may experience heavier rainfall. If the weather is like other mild El Niños then you might expect some fine California diving this season.
