Stormy Winter So Far, Jade’s Up!
December was a stormy month in California and the big waves kept most of us from the water. These non-stop storms are a due to the larger than average El Niño event that is warming the Pacific waters this year. The good news is that the storms have stirred up the sea floor along the Central Coast. This is a good time to look for newly exposed gems at Jade Cove!


Beach Closures Unnecessary?
A Stanford University scientist’s study has uncovered major flaws in testing methods used by public health officials throughout California to check for bacterial contamination of sea water. Dr. Alexandria Boehm concluded that many of the state’s beach closures are unnecessary, while delayed testing results could also leave the public at risk. Dr. Boehm’s study discovered that current sampling methods don’t sample frequently enough, and that the samples take so long to process that “By the time you put up the sign, it’s likely that the pollution event is gone.”
