Orcas Move Quickly into Southern California Waters
Orcas (a.k.a. Killer whales) have been spotted by Reef Seekers Dive Company (Beverly Hills) on a recent trip off of Santa Barbara Island. Several animals were spotted. Using photos, one was later identified by whale experts to be a whale that was spotted off Monterey only 10 days earlier.
Monterey Bay Sanctuary Unveils Interactive Web Site
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administrations (NOAA) Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary launched a new state-of-the-art web site that provides the public with fast, easy access to the latest high quality scientific research and monitoring information on the sanctuarys major habitats, species and issues. The Sanctuarys Integrated Monitoring Network referred to as SIMoNis based on a GIS (Geographic Information System) map of the sanctuary that will also allow users to access actual data and build their own downloadable maps to visually display monitoring results. NOAA Awards $250,000 to Educate Students, Teachers About Monterey Bay
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has awarded funds for projects that promote environmental and marine education and focus on educating students and teachers about the Monterey Bay watershed. A total of $250,516 has been awarded to seven organizations that will introduce 3,950 students and more than 150 teachers to the Sanctuary and the greater marine environment. This years grant recipients were selected based on criteria that focus on providing students and teachers with meaningful outdoor experiences. Among the winners were: Carmel Unified School District, Monterey High School, Foundation for California State University Monterey Bay - Camp SEA Lab, Foundation of California State University Monterey Bay - Watershed Institute, San Jose State University Foundation - Moss Landing Marine Laboratories.
