Scramble Spearfishing Meet — August 2
The 35th Annual Fathomiers Scramble Spearfishing Meet will take place Saturday, August 2. Participants can register and check-in 0.6 miles west of Point Fermin Park, San Pedro, on Palos Verdes peninsula.

Rules are simple. Freediving only. Sign in on site between 5 a.m. and 8 a.m. at Point Fermin Park (west). All divers must sign and date form and agree to terms of participation. All divers must sign in before diving. All fish must be in weigh-in circle at 3:00 p.m. SHARP! There is a $10 entry fee with a $10 optional largest fish “Jackpot.” (Must be paid in cash at sign in). This jackpot is being sponsored by some of the competitors. The L.A. Fathomiers do not sanction or profit from this jackpot. All money collected is awarded to the winner. There will be trophies for 1st—5th places. Trophies based only on total weight of three largest fish per diver. One fish per species. (The usual Fathomiers ±1 point per fish rule will not be used) Rays, sharks, molas and eels are excluded. A trophy will also be awarded for the largest fish. There will be a raffle held after weigh-in.

No. CA Marine Biology Course — starts Aug. 19
City College of San Francisco will offer a semester course in marine biology for divers and non-divers. The class focuses on the marine life in Northern California with special emphasis on plant and animal identification and life histories.

The class meets Tuesday evenings, 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., August 19 through December 9, at City College of San Francisco, 50 Phelan Ave., Science Building, Room 322, San Francisco.

There will be four weekend dive trips (11 dives) to various sites including Monterey Bay, Pt. Lobos, Gerstle Cove, and Russian Gulch Cove.

Discovery Lab at Aquarium — Dates through August
The Discovery Lab’s hours at Cabrillo Marine Aquarium have expanded to allow for more opportunities to visit. In addition to being open every Wed. afternoon from 3:00 p.m. — 5:00 p.m., the Discovery Lab is also open every Fri. in Aug. from 1:00 p.m. — 3:00 p.m. Weekend opportunities include: Sat., Aug 2 and August 17 from 3:00 p.m. — 5:00 p.m.

Each session of the Discovery Lab has a different theme and project that visitors can make and take home with them. All sessions include an opportunity to use microscopes, explore specimens, ask questions, and use resources to learn more about the ocean. This summer some of the topics will include fish, sharks, sandy beach inhabitants, migratory visitors, experimenting with saltwater, marine conservation and more.

These programs are free to all participants due to generous financial support of the Norris Foundation and Friends of Cabrillo Marine Aquarium.

Cabrillo Marine Aquarium is located at 3720 Stephen White Drive in San Pedro, and is a facility of the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks.

Chocolate Lobster Dive — Sept. 20
Both certified scuba and skin divers are invited to participate in the Sixth Annual Cabrillo Chocolate Lobster Dive taking place on Saturday, September 20, 2003. Contestants in this unusual event will dive off the waters of Cabrillo Beach in search of hundreds of solid milk chocolate lobsters.

The event is limited to 500 participants who will be eligible to win over $35,000 in prizes provided by dive equipment manufacturers and other sponsors. The grand prizes include a Cobra Play Kayak, and a four-day, three-night trip on a Royal Caribbean Cruise. Proceeds from the event benefit Cabrillo Marine Aquarium’s Aquatic Nursery Program, a place where Cabrillo Marine Aquarium (CMA) grows young sea animals and young scientists.
