3Rs Beach Diving Workshops - August 12, 19, and more
Rocks, Reefs and Rips program (3Rs) is a half-day course designed to familiarize divers with popular beach dive sites and improve their beach diving skills.
Sessions will take place Aug. 12 at Point Dume (Los Angeles County); Aug. 19 at La Jolla Cove (San Diego County); Sept. 9 at Old Marineland (Los Angeles County); Sept. 16 at Hospital Point (San Diego County); Oct. 14 at White Point (Los Angeles County).
Instructors will demonstrate and supervise proper surf entry and exit procedures, explain unique aspects of the dive site, and discuss dive condition assessment techniques. Participants are then led on a snorkeling tour of the dive site. (Participants are to wear full wetsuit, mask, fins, snorkel, and a weight belt with half of the normal weight they use for diving. Tanks and regulators are not allowed.)
For each of the events, registration and briefing is at 8 a.m. A donation is suggested. The San Diego 3Rs are staged by the San Diego Council of Divers, San Diego Lifeguards, and various area dive clubs. The Pacific Coast Underwater Photographic Competition (PCUPC 2000) will be held in San Diego, California on August 11-13, 2000. Each contestant has up to sixteen hours to capture images on a single 36-exposure roll of Kodak Ektachrome E100VS slide film, videotape, or on a 27-exposure single use camera. The limits on time and film make PCUPC different from many other photographic contests. Because all competitors will be shooting in roughly similar locations and under similar ocean conditions, photographic technique, pre-dive planning, and the ability to make every shot count will be crucial.
Divisions include Novice, Amateur and Advanced. Categories include Marine Life, The Diver, and Macro. Contest format and awards has five components. Awards will be given for: Division Competition - Best of Show, Best of Category, and first, second and third in each division/category; Humor Competition; Team Competition; Video Competition; Single Use Camera.
For information and registration forms, contact San Diego Underwater Photographic Society-PCUPC 3094 Nile Street San Diego, CA USA 92104, (619) 584-0278, e-mail kerg@cts.com, or visit www.personal.isat.com/sdups/pcupc.htm on the web.
