Zeagle Teleoz Fins

Fin innovation has been something of a quest lately among equipment manufacturers, with some new designs sprouting more flaps and fins than a '57 Caddie. Zeagle Systems of Zephyrhills, Florida has taken a different approach with their new Teleoz line of fins, one that emphasizes simplicity, comfort, and ease of use in an extremely lightweight and compact design.

"We did a lot of evaluation of existing fins and new designs of fin blades," says Dennis Bulin, company founder and president. "What we found was that the performance differences between the different types of blades were relatively minor, but that we could greatly improve the ease of use and comfort of fins by attaching them to the diver in a different way."

The Teleoz blades feature a very slender, subtly curved profile, with an efficient design. The big difference, however, between these fins and all other designs is in the foot pocket. Rather than a plastic container into which a diver's feet are held by a heel strap, Zeagle's new fins use a flexible fabric binding system, something like a cross between a sandal and a running shoe. The foot binding is very adjustable, allowing the same fin to be used by a diver while barefoot, wearing booties or even with dry suit boots. "Pulling a plastic bucket over your toes did not seem to be the best way to attach fins - there's no reason fins can't fit as well as any other type of athletic footwear," continues Bulin.

The innovative foot pocket design yields a couple of other benefits, one that becomes apparent when you take the fins off, particularly in the water. A simple tug on the top-mounted buckle instantly releases the binding and frees the fins; there is no tendency for them to suck down onto your foot and not want to let go. The open-toed design, according to Zeagle, should reduce stress on the calf muscle and reduce the tendency some divers have towards cramping.

The design also greatly reduces the weight and bulk of the fin, making them particularly suitable for the diver who travels, as fins are often one of the heaviest and most difficult to pack parts of a gear bag.
