On the Cover: CA Diver Brings Art From The Depths
David Clendenen has been drawing, sketching, and painting all of his life and began scuba and free diving nine years ago. He recently combined his love for art and the seas in a series of limited edition prints entitled The North Coast.
Since becoming a certified diver in 1994, David has frequently dived off the Central and Northern California coasts. Their beauty and magnificent imagery have been the inspiration for his most recent pieces of art.
These pieces began as conceptual sketches, roughly rendered in pen and ink by hand. While the scenes are drawn from his own diving experiences, photographs and underwater sketches are used for reference. After several treatments at larger scales to establish the right composition and level of detail, David decides upon its final design and the hand rendering is completed in pencil. David then scans the drawing, colorizes it using computer software, digitally renders the image to a high-resolution TIFF file, and sends the file to a specialty photo lab for output from a Durst Lambda printer. The Lambda printer exposes the artwork directly onto Fujicolor Crystal Archive photo paper producing museum-grade color photographic prints (or C-prints) that are then hand-signed and numbered as limited edition prints.
In addition, three of Davids pieces, Abalone Diver Descending (on the cover), Abalone Diver Ascending, and Gray Whale at Monastery are available as offset-printed posters, and the others are available in the form of promotional C-prints, all of which are available both framed and unframed.
