Kelp Returning to Coronados

The Coronados Islands are an archipelago of four islands south of San Diego in Mexican waters. They are popular with San Diego Divers for their clear, life-filled waters. They were once noted for substantial kelp forests. In the '80s and '90s, however, abusive fishing activities and warm waters wiped the area clean of any kelp.

There are now reports of a deep kelp forest returning to a reef northwest of Middle Ground Rock, the smallest of the islands. Depths average 80 feet and the location is frequently swept with powerful currents, but those that have dived the spot say it is very exciting.

Divers to loose McAbee Beach?

The City of Monterey is planning to allow the construction of a major project named the Cannery Row Market. The project includes 3.5 acres on both sides of Cannery Row from McAbee to the Chart House Restaurant, four new buildings, three levels of underground parking, 41 condo's, six low and moderate income residential units, 45,614 square feet of restaurants, and 102,565 square feet of residential. It is unclear how the development will affect diving regarding access during or after construction.

Comments on the development can be sent to the Monterey Planning Dept., City of Monterey, Monterey, CA 93950.

San Diego Surf Report Number

San Diego has a new surf and dive report phone number, operated by the city lifeguard service. That number is (619) 221-8824. Included in the report is wave height and direction, as well as water clarity and surge information for popular dive sites.

Senior Diver Internet Group

Using the internet, a club of divers over 60 years of age is now forming. To be known as the Senior Sea Hunters, the group will pursue adventurous travel diving worldwide. Interested parties should contact Frank Farmer by e-mail at aadiver@tstonramp.com.
