Bats Abundant
Large schools of juvenile bat rays have been showing up along Southern California beaches. One diver describing seeing a “herd” of them off La Jolla Cove. The shallows near Redondo Submarine Canyon have also seen many visitors. Measuring about two feet across, the brownish juveniles are best seen in the early to mid-morning before bathers and other divers have scared them off. Look in 10 to 20 feet of water in the sand flats.

Triggerfish at Long Point
Long Point (a.k.a. Old Marineland) on the Palos Verdes Peninsula is a popular beach dive with local L.A. area divers. There have been recent reports of triggerfish at this location. Triggerfish, usually finescale triggerfish, are a semi-tropical species that are occasionally seen as far north as the Los Coronados Islands in Mexican waters just south of San Diego. A few years ago some were spotted off Catalina. This trigger report off Palos Verdes, however, is unique.
