Dolphin Dive Club Celebrates 25 Years This month, the Dolphin Dive Club, in Arcadia, California, one of California’s premiere dive clubs, celebrates their 25th anniversary. Begun in 1980 by Susan Speck and Budd Riker, then the owners of Divers West in Arcadia, the club easily spanned the change into the Dolphin Dive Center, now under the new ownership of Tim O’Mara. Former co-owners Susan Speck and Bruce Williams are now putting full-time efforts into their Baja Dolphin Dive Center, in Loreto, Baja Mexico. Since its beginning, the Dolphin Dive Club has sponsored innumerable activities. From California beaches and offshore islands, to Thailand, Fiji, Honduras, Mexico, Caymans, Belize, the Red Sea, the rapids of the Colorado River (yes, underwater!) and many other exciting locations, Dolphin Club members and friends have enjoyed some of the best diving in the world. They even gained national notoriety with several years of over-the-top participation in Pasadena’s outlandish Doo-Dah Parade! Does anyone remember a 47-foot white shark that sang the “Jaws” theme and belched after it consumed wayward divers “swimming” down the street? The Dolphin Dive Club has also been active in fostering education in environmental issues regarding the ocean, participating in Rocks ‘N Reefs programs, the Catalina Avalon Harbor Clean-Up dives, conducting yearly cleanup dives at Lake Perris, and even pond cleanup dives at camping areas on the Kern River. Many of the Club’s monthly speakers come in to discuss environmental issues. Many members have developed award-winning underwater photographic and video talents, encouraged to “bring ‘em back alive.” A high percentage of members over the years have continued their training to become divemasters and instructors, and the safety record of the club is exceptional. Meetings are held the first Tuesday of each month, now at a new location: Matt Denny’s Ale House Restaurant, at 145 E. Huntington Drive, in Arcadia, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Every month, a beach dive is conducted on the Sunday following the club meeting, along with boat dives and other activities. Members old and new, and visitors alike, are invited to join the Dolphins for their Silver Anniversary Celebration at the May 3rd meeting.
